The Prison of Elders is an end game activity within Destiny , which you will have to unlock as you play and complete others within the Reef. Bungie gave players a look at Destiny ‘s new and evidently pretty tough Prison of Elders mode in a live stream earlier today. The short explanation is “yep, it’s definitely a three-player horde mode” – but with all the flourishes and quirks you expect from high-level Destiny play. The base-level Prison of Elders is rated for Level 28, and all of its challenges and modifiers are randomly selected.
It’s matchmaking-ready and you’re free to play as many times a week as you want. If you have a pre-made team, you can also take a crack at the three challenges set at level 32, level 34, and level Each one has its own name and themed modifiers and objectives, and new ones will rotate in weekly for each level slot. Once you’re in the match, you’ll apparently have to clear five rounds of three waves each – I say “apparently” because the Bungie streamers, who were doing one of the tougher curated challenges, never made it past the fourth round.
Each round will apply a new mechanical modifier: you could get something beneficial like increased damage for primary weapons, or something a bit more troublesome, like boosted shields yay that don’t ever recharge boo. You’ll also have to complete multiple critical objectives like defusing mines or taking out VIP targets. Thankfully, Prison of Elders warden Variks will occasionally offer gifts like heavy ammo or the explosive new Scorch Cannon to help you put down his unruly inmates.
Successfully clearing a match will reportedly reward players with a Treasure Key and access to a room filled with a random assortment of loot. Though, again, the stream didn’t get that far. Even if it was a pretty anticlimactic end to the weekly House of Wolves preview streams, Prison of Elders does look pretty promising for casual pick-up players and hardcore teams alike. Make sure you check out our coverage of the new PvP survival event Trials of Osiris , and how House of Wolves loot changes should smoothe down some of the gear grind.

Before you can even get started with Prison of Elders, you have to unlock it.
You get a very helpful Treasure Key when you finish more on that in a minute , and you unlock the bottom-tier level 28 Prison of Elders. The next thing you need to do is run through the Prison. Again, it’s a necessary step. There are three higher level challenges — level 32, 34 and 35 — and that’s where the good stuff is.
This is a good thing for several reasons. The higher-level tiers introduce a few extra wrinkles, but the foundation remains the same. Best of all, you still stand to get some great loot from the lowest-level run, thanks to that Treasure Key.
Destiny fans wolf down House of Wolves’ hardest challenge
Jump to navigation. Most endgame activities in Destiny Nightfall Strikes, Raids, the Trials of Osiris PvP mode, the higher-level versions of Prison of Elders currently do not support matchmaking since they require the sort of coordination only an established group of players could attain. Even endgame activities that do support matchmaking, such as the Iron Banner PvP event, the lowest-difficulty tier of Prison of Elders, and Heroic Strikes, are so difficult to complete that throwing yourself to the mercy of the matchmaking system is a gamble where the odds are definitely not in your favor.
If there was more endgame content for solo-minded Destiny players to sink their teeth into, I doubt the game would be getting as much of a bad rap as it does now. A typical Prison of Elders match is made up of five rounds with each round awarding a small bit of faction reputation upon completion.
I played it on level 32, as a level 33, and it was hard. People on that place even oppose optional matchmaking and adding checkpoints to Prison of Elders.
There are four pieces of downloadable content DLC that were released for Bungie ‘s first-person shooter video game Destiny. Each package of downloadable content added new player versus environment PvE missions and player versus player PvP modes, new locales to visit, and new items for the player to make use of. The third, The Taken King , was released in September and had the largest effect on the game, as it changed much of the core gameplay.
In December , Destiny shifted to an event-based model, featuring more periodical limited-time events. The timed exclusive content that was available at the launch of Destiny , as well as the exclusive content of the first two expansions, became available for Xbox when The Taken King launched. Prior to the official release of Destiny in September , Bungie declared that a major component of the game would be a continuous release of new content. Bungie Director of Production Jonty Barnes said: “We’re going to continuously update the game from now until the end of time.
That’s always going to be part of the philosophy of Destiny.

Today, Bungie took to Twitch and other sources around the interwebs to showcase the new endgame activity for Destiny, the Prison of Elders. The new mode allows for a few ways to play in terms of difficulty. During the livestream, a display of the new location, The Reef, gave us a look at four ways to get down and dirty with the activity all staged for different levels of challenge.
It was expressed that the base version is a level 28 random activity in the Prison of Elders that allows matchmaking and can be played as many times as desired for constant reward. From what I understand, the activity consists of about 5 to 6 rounds each spanning 3 waves to complete. Before entering a room however, each round you are given a match modifier that affects the way you take on the room.
Some of these modifiers may be familiar to those that make the weekly strike grind such as Arc Burn or Lightswitch, but there are new ones as well like Brawler that increases Guardian melee damage or even one that buffs the amount of damage your shield can take but also negates shield regeneration. Constantly having to switch up your gear or tactics on the fly will require some heavy concentration and coordination from you and your Fireteam.
Some round waves also have objective based gameplay like I said before. This entails things like having to capture zones to disarm bombs in certain time frames or killing a specific enemy before he reaches his destination all in the midst of combat making players become constantly on the move. If these secondary objectives are not completed, guardians are brutally forced to restart the round from square one so be sure to hit those objectives as soon as they pop up.

It is based on the House of Judgment ‘s traditions for settling disputes between Fallen through trial by combat. The Archon Priest Aksor was previously a prisoner before later being retrieved by Taniks and having his soul restored by the House of Winter on Venus. The Prison of Elders is also known to contain members of the House of Wolves that were captured during the Reef Wars , though it also contains Hive , Vex and Cabal inmates who have attacked the Reef.
These prisoners are considered “trophies” by the Reef, kept cryogenically frozen for the Queen’s benefit. Though since Skolas ‘ rebellion, the Queen now wants the prison cleared out, and has recruited the Guardians to do it. A year after the Red War , the undead Fallen horde known as the Scorn orchestrated an incredibly massive breakout from the prison, following a lack of order after Mara Sov ‘s and Variks ‘ disappearances.
Uldren Sov was behind the escape, and executed Cayde-6 with his own weapon after he attempted to stop the breakout alongside the Guardian. Numerous prisoners not strictly affiliated with the Scorn, collectively referred to as the Wanted , also escaped the prison, going on to roam Patrol zones and roost in Lost Sectors. The Prison is featured in the House of Wolves as part of the new Arena game mode.
